‘L’Association des Amis du Musée de l’Empéri’ is a cultural association founded in 1968 (under the French Law of 1901) to pursue the work of Raoul and Jean Brunon by ensuring the protection and enhancement of the exceptional collection of historical and military memorabilia they gathered in Marseille for nearly three-quarters of a century before it was purchase by the State in 1967 to be displayed in Château de l’Empéri, Salon-de-Provence, a castle ideally named to house the largest private collection ever devoted to the Napoleonic army: Empéri means ‘empire’ in the Provençal language, a distant reference to the days when Provence belonged to the Holy Roman Empire.
Originally founded in 1936 as ‘L’Association des Amis de la Collection Raoul & Jean Brunon’ for the purpose of providing a museum for the public to be able to view this private collection? It had already become important enough in 1935 for the news weekly L’Illustration to print a long article illustrated in full colour in which General Brécard, President of La Sabretache, emphasized that it was “not only unique in France, but such that no foreign nation has anything in any way comparable for their own army.” He also asserted that, “attractively presented, on appropriate premises and open to the public, it would form a grandiose ensemble that would immediately be world famous.” The Association included prestigious names among its members and such illustrious sponsors as the Prince of Monaco and Marshal Franchet d’Espérey.
Since the museum’s foundation, it has become an essential support for activities, events and communication and strives today to maintain and reactivate the dynamic momentum set by its founders as well as their sensibility, taste and culture. In short, it embodies what we could call the ‘Brunon spirit’, whose example has gained widespread acclaim and whose achievements at L’Empéri continue to attract specialists and neophytes alike.
The Brunons’ museography is an work of art in itself; it gives the museum its unequalled charm appreciated by all visitors. It is itself a precious fragile heritage: precious because nothing could be more so than connoisseur’s approach to the subject of his passion, fragile because nothing could be more so than taste and talent, unfortunately subject to the vicissitudes of fashion, individuals and time.
Aware of this mission of preserving a heritage that is unique not only for the quality of the artefacts it has assembled, but for the way they are displayed, ‘L’Association des Amis du Musée de l’Empéri’ aims to adapt to the contemporary world by instilling life into the collection through information, media coverage, exchanges, meetings, activities, lectures and publications. The association maintains exchanges, partnerships and friendly relations with other associations, institutions and historical and cultural organizations that share the same areas of interest and pursue the same goals in France and abroad. It also seeks to expand its cultural territory and field of action to new approaches and new historical and educational methods with a view to modernity and ensuring that this heritage can be better shared.
If these purposes are yours, if you appreciate this museum, please help us preserve it as you would like to see it.
